About Manjistha Ghee

Experience the rich heritage of Ayurveda in each jar of our Manjistha Ghee.

Manjistha Ghee is our most visually striking formulation — and one of the most rare. While Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) is a cornerstone herb of classical Ayurvedic practice, a dedicated herbal ghee built around it simply does not exist at this level of potency or purity anywhere else. This is not an incidental inclusion of Manjistha in a blend. It is the featured herb — at full strength, by design.

Handcrafted in small batches in the USA, this formulation begins with premium grass-fed cultured butter gently infused with organic Manjistha root — one of Ayurveda's most revered herbs used to support healthy blood flow, lymphatic support, and radiant skin. Its characteristic deep crimson color is not a dye or additive, it is the natural signature of Manjistha's potent anthraquinone pigments: purpurin, rubiadin, and alizarin. That color is evidence of the herb's presence and potency in every jar.

Minimally processed for integrity, our Manjistha Ghee contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or stabilizers. It is naturally gluten-free, nut-free, lactose-free, casein-free, and suitable for keto and paleo lifestyles.*

More than a substitute for regular butter or oil, this is a deeply nourishing kitchen staple shaped by heritage, craftsmanship, and Ayurvedic intelligence — crafted to bring deep flavor, richness, and purpose to every spoonful.

Flavor Profile

Deep, earthy, and grounding — with a mild bitterness and a subtle astringency that reflects Manjistha's purifying nature. The herbaceous depth is present but not sharp, softened by the rich, creamy base of cultured ghee into something warm and complex. It carries a faintly woody undertone with a long finish — best suited for savory preparations, though it adds unexpected depth to spiced sweet dishes as well.

The color is as striking as the flavor. The deep crimson hue of this ghee is a living marker of its potency — a reminder that what you are cooking with is more than a fat. It is a formulation.

Beneficial Ingredients & Qualities

Every ingredient in this formulation was chosen with intention: for its quality, its traditional significance, and the role it plays in making this more than just a cooking ingredient. Here is what goes into every jar, and why it matters.

Grass-Fed Cultured Butter:

The foundation of every ghee — chosen for its quality, its character, and its deep roots in traditional Ayurveda.

  • Cultured and fermented for superior digestibility: Unlike conventional butter, cultured butter is made from cream that has been fermented before churning — a process that breaks down heavier compounds and makes the resulting ghee easier to digest and absorb. In Ayurveda, this fermented base is considered essential: classical texts specify that ghee made from cultured dairy is better suited to serve as a carrier (yogavahi) — meaning it actively helps transport the therapeutic properties of herbs deeper into the body's tissues. This is what makes herbal ghee meaningfully different from plain ghee or infused oils.

  • Rich in nourishing fats and fat-soluble vitamins: Sourced from grass-fed, pasture-raised cows, this butter delivers a robust nutritional profile — including healthy saturated fats, omega-3 fatty acids, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), along with fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, which support everything from immune function to bone health to skin vitality.

  • High smoke point — versatile for everyday cooking: With a smoke point of 485°F, ghee remains stable at high heat without breaking down or producing harmful compounds — making it a cleaner, more versatile alternative to most cooking oils and conventional butter for sautéing, roasting, frying, and baking.

  • Naturally shelf-stable and virtually free of lactose and casein: The clarification process removes water and milk solids, leaving behind pure butterfat that is naturally shelf-stable at room temperature and contains almost no lactose or casein — making it a widely well-tolerated option even for those with dairy sensitivity.

  • A natural source of butyrate: Ghee is one of the richest dietary sources of butyrate — a short-chain fatty acid that research has linked to gut lining integrity, reduced intestinal inflammation, and a healthy immune response in the digestive tract.

Organic Manjistha Root (Rubia cordifolia):

Known as Indian Madder, Manjistha is one of Ayurveda's most revered purifying herbs — traditionally used to support the blood, lymphatic system, and skin from within, with thousands of years of classical use and a growing body of modern research to support it.

  • Blood support — the primary traditional use: In classical Ayurveda, Manjistha is considered the preeminent rakta shodhaka — an herb traditionally used to support the quality and healthy function of rakta dhatu (blood tissue). In Ayurvedic physiology, the quality of the blood directly influences the health of the skin, organs, and all the tissues it nourishes. When the blood carries excess heat or accumulated ama (metabolic waste), the body signals this through the skin, the lymph, and overall vitality. Manjistha is traditionally prescribed to support the blood at this level — nourishing and clarifying it from within.

Modern research reflects this traditional understanding: Manjistha's key bioactive compounds — purpurin, alizarin, munjistin, and rubiadin — have been studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, their support of liver enzyme function, and their role in cellular detoxification pathways.

  • Lymphatic and channel support: The lymphatic system is the body's secondary circulatory network — responsible for clearing cellular waste, immune debris, and metabolic byproducts. Manjistha is one of Ayurveda's primary herbs for supporting the smooth flow of lymph through the body's channels (srotas). In Ayurvedic understanding, sluggish lymphatic flow often manifests in the skin — as dullness, inflammation, or persistent breakouts. By supporting both the blood and the lymph simultaneously, Manjistha works on two of the body's most fundamental cleansing systems at once.

Modern research reflects this: Rubia cordifolia (Manjistha) has been shown to promote lymphatic drainage and enhance the body's natural processes by supporting blood circulation and helping the body manage deep-seated impurities.

  • Skin clarity and complexion — from the inside out: Manjistha's reputation as a skin herb is inseparable from its role in blood support — because in Ayurvedic understanding, the skin is a direct reflection of the blood. When the blood is clear and well-nourished, the skin follows. Traditionally used for a wide range of skin concerns including acne, eczema, psoriasis, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone, Manjistha is understood to work at the root of these concerns rather than the surface. In Ayurvedic understanding, supporting the blood is supporting the skin — the two are inseparable. Its anthraquinone compounds — including purpurin and alizarin — contribute powerful antioxidant effects that help protect skin cells from oxidative damage, while its anti-inflammatory properties help address the internal heat and inflammation that commonly manifest as skin imbalances. It has historically been used both internally and externally in classical Ayurvedic skin preparations.

  • Liver and kidney support: Manjistha is considered one of the best Pitta-pacifying herbs in Ayurveda, and is traditionally used to support the healthy function of both the liver and kidneys — the two primary organs of filtration in the body. The compound rubiadin in particular has been studied for its ability to promote liver enzyme function, supporting the body's natural detoxification processes — the pathways by which the liver processes and prepares waste for elimination. In Ayurvedic practice, a well-supported liver is understood to be foundational to both clear skin and healthy blood.

  • Circulatory support: Scientific studies have explored Manjistha's role in supporting healthy blood pressure and normal blood vessel function. In Ayurveda, supporting healthy circulation is understood as part of Manjistha's broader action — clear, freely moving blood is blood that nourishes every tissue it reaches.

  • Anti-inflammatory support throughout the body: Manjistha has been studied for its significant anti-inflammatory properties, which may benefit multiple systems simultaneously — from the skin and joints to the respiratory and digestive tracts. Its Pitta-reducing quality addresses the Ayurvedic root of most inflammatory conditions: excess heat in the blood and tissues. Classical formulas frequently paired Manjistha with ghee precisely because ghee's cooling, lubricating qualities complement and deepen Manjistha's own anti-inflammatory action.

  • Women's reproductive wellness: Manjistha's traditional role in supporting the reproductive system is closely tied to its action on rakta dhatu — in Ayurvedic physiology, the quality of menstrual blood is considered a direct reflection of blood tissue health. Manjistha has been traditionally used to support healthy menstruation and the balance of the reproductive system overall.

  • Antioxidant protection at the cellular level: Manjistha is rich in bioactive compounds — including flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, as well as anthraquinones and tannins — that provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. These compounds help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, contributing to Manjistha's traditional reputation as an herb that supports the sustained vitality of the body's tissues over time.

Ayurvedic Tradition

Manjistha's use dates back centuries in classical Ayurvedic texts — it is mentioned in the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita as a key rakta-shodhaka: a blood purifier of the highest order.

In Ayurvedic physiology, the blood is not simply a transport medium — it is a living tissue (rakta dhatu) with its own intelligence, whose quality ripples through every system it touches. The classical texts describe blood as the root of life itself: when it is pure and well-nourished, the body expresses health, clarity, and vitality. When it is burdened by toxins, heat, or stagnation, the effects travel outward — to the skin, the lymph, the organs, and the complexion. Manjistha was understood to address this from the inside, working at the level of the tissue itself rather than the symptom.

Its classical Ayurvedic properties place it as primarily Kapha and Pitta balancing — cooling excess heat in the blood while clearing the congestion and stagnation associated with Kapha accumulation. Its tastes (rasa) are described as bitter, sweet, and astringent — each contributing to its purifying, toning, and tissue-building actions in different ways.

In classical understanding, Manjistha is described as Varnakrut, a brightener and improver of skin complexion, as well as supportive for inflammatory skin conditions, eye disorders, gynecological health, and toxic conditions (visha). Its scope in classical medicine was broad precisely because blood and lymph touch everything — an herb that purifies at that level has far-reaching effects.

The pairing of Manjistha with cultured ghee is itself classical, not a modern formulation choice. Ghee's role as a yogavahi, a carrier that amplifies and deepens the action of whatever herb it carries, was understood by classical physicians to make it the ideal vehicle for Manjistha's purifying action. Where Manjistha targets the blood and lymph, ghee opens the channels and carries it there. Together, they form one of Ayurveda's most enduring therapeutic combinations — offered here in a form that has simply never been available at this level of dedication and potency before.

What Sets Us Apart

We don’t just make products — we preserve a legacy.

Every aspect of what we do reflects our commitment to authenticity, craftsmanship, intention, integrity, and Ayurvedic tradition.

  • We use cultured butter — most don’t.
Made from traditionally fermented cream, cultured butter enhances both flavor and digestibility — giving a smoother texture and richer, more complex character than versions made with sweet cream or mass-produced alternatives.

From an Ayurvedic standpoint, this choice is deeply rooted in tradition. Classical preparation of ghee begins with cultured dairy because fermentation transforms the heavier, cooler qualities of cream into something more refined and bioavailable — making ghee better suited to serve as a yogavahi/anupana: a carrier that amplifies and transports the therapeutic properties of herbs into the body's deeper tissues, or dhatus. This is what makes herbal ghee so much more than the sum of its ingredients.

The butter we use begins on small farms where cows graze freely and live with dignity. We support partners who uphold high standards for animal well-being — from humane treatment to the ability to express natural behaviors. This respect for life honors both the integrity of our ingredients and the spirit of Ayurveda itself.

It's a difference you can taste — and feel.

  • Certified organic botanicals, chosen for potency and purity.
Every herbal ingredient is USDA certified organic, sustainably sourced, and carefully selected to preserve its natural vitality. We use whole herbs — never extracts or flavor oils — and gently infuse them, following traditional methods that respect their energetic and therapeutic properties.

  • Every botanical is rigorously tested.
Each herb is verified not just for its traditional value, but for its purity. Our trusted partners uphold rigorous safety standards, and every botanical undergoes third-party testing against strict thresholds for pesticides, microbes, and heavy metals.

  • Handcrafted in small batches.
We prepare each blend by hand in small batches, with the time and attention that allows us to maintain the highest standards of freshness, consistency, and care at every step of the process.

Our herbal ghee alone takes the better part of a full day: from the slow clarification to the careful herbal infusion that brings each batch to its ideal color, clarity, and aroma. That kind of time investment is increasingly rare — but for us, it is essential. Because when a product is made to nourish deeply, every step matters.

  • Rooted in Lineage.
Our formulas draw directly from a family tradition of Ayurvedic practice spanning more than 200 years — including generations of classically trained physicians, educators, and healers. This is not Ayurveda as aesthetic or trend. It is Ayurveda as inheritance: carried forward through family, discipline, and devotion — and handcrafted with that same care since 1896. Every jar reflects that depth.

Recommended Use

Use Manjistha Ghee as a substitute for butter or oil in cooking, baking, or as a spread. With its high smoke point it is excellent for sautéing vegetables, frying eggs, roasting meats, and finishing grains or legumes. Its earthy, grounding flavor pairs particularly well with savory dishes, spiced preparations, soups, and stews. It can also be added to warm broths or beverages for a deeply nourishing addition. Best enjoyed as part of a mindful, nourishing diet — the way it was always meant to be.

Crafted with no artificial ingredients or preservatives, our product is minimally processed for purity. Due to the lack of additive stabilizers, natural separation may occur

Please stir thoroughly before use.

Store at room temperature. Keep moisture out to preserve freshness. Always use a clean, dry utensil for each use.

A note on color: Manjistha is a deeply pigmented herb — the same natural anthraquinone compounds that give this ghee its striking crimson color may lightly tint cooking liquids or pale-colored dishes during preparation. Some users may also notice a temporary orange or pinkish tint to their urine, particularly when first beginning use. Both are completely harmless and are simply the natural expression of the herb's compounds at work.
